Ivanovs at Dense Space of Arsenals

An Ivanovs painting from his 2003 series Optical Vibration can be seen at Latvian National Art Museum exhibition hall Arsenals at the exhibition Dense Space that had its private view yesterday, Dec 9. All works shown belong to the art collection of Dr. Biol. Guntis Belēvics. The exhibition is open until January 29, 2012

Works from the collection of Dr. biol. Guntis Belēvičs: This exhibition with over 120 works by some 80 authors analyses the characteristics of perception in space saturated with information. The diversity of content and form in art that exists simultaneously influences people’s perception. “Paradoxically, the denser the information around us, the thinner is our perception using the senses of touch and smell. Evidence of an empty space is given by light, echo and temperature.

When the space becomes more dense with information we put more trust in sight and begin to categorise things because sight helps us to understand things from afar, for example, the large writing on advertisements. As soon as we begin to rely on sight, contact is lost with the other senses. This influences perception of the space. If we perceive it mainly through sight, the space becomes “thinner”. It seems that the complex levels of perception are no longer working,” says architect and exhibition curator Laura Belēviča. The exhibition plays on this phenomenon creating situations in which art encourages us to think about the political context of the age and personal longings.

On show are works by Ilmārs Blumbergs, Harijs Brants, Inga Brūvere, Daina Dagnija, Sigita Daugule, Biruta Delle, Juris Dimiters, Andris Eglītis, Miķelis Fišers, Kristaps Ģelzis, Ieva Iltnere, Sandra Krastiņa, Ginters Krumholcs, Ivars Miķelsons, Ģirts Muižnieks, Felicita Pauļuka, Viktorija Pelše, OjārsPētersons, Ivars Poikāns, Miervaldis Polis, Juris Putrāms, Guntars Sietiņš, Džemma Skulme, Raimonds Staprāns, Ēriks Stendzenieks, Ilze Strekavina, Māris Subačs, Juris Utāns, Edgars Vērpe, Aija Zariņa, Kaspars Zariņš, Otto Zitmanis and other authors.
