Group show at Rietumu bank

After 20 years, the exhibition brings together the works of 21 painters. Rietumu Bank is hosting a group show including Ritums Ivanovs paintings. At the turn of the century, the gallerist Agija Sūna started the project “21 of XXI”, inviting new painters to participate in it, who, according to A. Sūna, are promising and will prove themselves in the 21st century. Within the framework of the project, a catalog of works by 21 young artists was published and a series of exhibitions took place in the premises of Agija Sūna Gallery.

Agija Sūna points out that painting and its meaning have changed over the last 20 years. Many painters have gone outside Latvia, international demand has changed, many galleries have disappeared, but there are still excellent and promising artists in Latvia. “Change also happens in the interests of painters, and it must be so, because the artist must not stand still. Today we have the opportunity to see the same highly valued and most promising painters 20 years ago, whose works have been purposefully combined by Māris Upzars. Thanks to Maris’ respectful attitude towards other artists, a serious exhibition of paintings has been organized. This is very important because artists currently have so few opportunities to showcase their latest work. I hope that this exhibition will surprise each other as well. ”

Agija Sūna regrets that today there is a catastrophic lack of funding for exhibitions. Therefore, state support is needed for galleries to play a role in the development of art.

The organizer of the exhibition, painter Māris Upzars: “Agija was aware that she wanted to work with painters who will be important participants in the art events of the 21st century in Latvia. Of course, she sensed that not all of these artists would become recognized masters of Latvian art, because people’s destinies tend to be very different and unpredictable. Several young and promising Latvian painters at that time have decided to realize their talents outside Latvia and now live and work in other countries. I am glad that several of them found opportunities and sent their works to the exhibition. ”

Almost all the painters involved in the project have successfully found a characteristic form of expression and are now well known to Latvian art lovers. In the joint exhibition, the artists show the viewers paintings that are different in terms of style, mood and color.

Sigita Daugule, painter: “Thanks to Agija’s project, we, still young and“ green ”artists in life at that time, were able to present ourselves and apply in the art world. It was a confirmation that he was moving in the right direction, and of course it was a huge motivation to develop and work further. ” So far, Sigita is the only Latvian painter who has ever won a scholarship from the prestigious Vienna Museum Quarter.

The project brings together painters Artūrs Akopjans, Barbara Gaile, Dace Zēģele, Dita Lūse, Ieva Baklāne, Ieva Jurjāne, Ingrīda Kadaka, Ilmārs Naglis, Jānis Titāns, Katrīna Avotiņa, Kristīna Keire, Kalvis Zuters, Laima Bikše, Madara Gulbis, Māris Upzars , Rihards Delvers, Ritums Ivanovs, Sigita Daugule, Signe Vanadziņa and Vineta Kaulača.
